Although some classical social theorists have argued that religion, as a social institution, will disappear once the social conditions that perpetuate it – such as poverty, inequality, scarcity, exploitation, oppression – have been eradicated from societies, there is little evidence to support this claim. Indeed, historical experience suggests that religion not only provides an important basis for social cohesion, but also fulfills a primal need for personal meaning and psychological comfort in the lives of many individuals in society. In other words: religion – in its various forms – is here to stay. Discuss these different interpretations of religion with reference to some of the relevant classical theorists, and provide your own observations and conclusions on this topic.
