15 Aug Participatory design and culture on social media
For this module, your research object will be the social media application of your choosing. This might be an application that we more commonly associate with “social media” like Discord, or TikTok, or you might select the chat/ communication functions on your favorite video game. Pick any application that allows you to socialize and form an online (or mobile) community. Define community however you like but please tell us what you mean.
In your discussion board post (350 words minimum):
In your post, describe and analyze your experience of community on a social media application using any TWO of the scholars from this module. (You can quote, paraphrase, or reference). Define your community, what are its distinguishing characteristics and can it be described as a subculture or fandom? Think about how you participate in this community on social media. For example, how does the social media application restrict your actions or interactions? How does it facilitate actions or interactions that might otherwise be impossible? In which ways do you participate specifically online? And is this a community which also exists in real life? Feel free to speculate as to how you might improve the application through new functionality or design.
