The final consists of five questions.  You must cite sociological concepts and show understanding of a sociological perspective to explain your answer and draw from class material.  Make sure to answer each part of the question.

You should answer in 2-4 paragraphs for each question:

  1. You are talking to a co-worker who asks you about your classes at Hunter.  When you tell them that you are in a Sociology course, they reply, That is a bunch of liberal nonsense, what a waste of time.”  1)Explain to your co-worker what sociology is and 2)give them an example of how it is helpful to understand some aspect of today’s world
  2. Culture and norms are ways that we are socialized in the society we live in. The norms we follow can be informal expectations or formal laws.  Give an example of a norm in US society, who created or enforces this norm, and using sociological theories of functional, conflict and symbolic interaction, explain this situation (use each theory)
  3. Explain 1)what sociologists mean by social location, and 2) choosing a current issue related to politics or the economy, discuss how people view this issue tying it to concepts we discussed in class.
  4. What do sociologists mean when they argue that 1) race, gender and sexuality are socially constructed? 2)How does this affect ones experiences in a social institution that we studied such as education, criminal justice system, or healthcare.  Give examples.
  5. Sociologists argue that there is social stratification in society, and that there is much social inequality in U.S. society today.  1) Give examples of how society is stratified and 2) how sociologists know social inequalities exist.
