Choose one of the following essay questions to respond to: (4-5 pages)
- Pick a position and discuss: the girl games movement was progressive or problematic.
- Pick a positive female protagonist from a game and discuss her representation.
- Games relationship to masculinity is problematic. Using two examples from games or game culture, discuss.
- Select a game in which the male gaze is strongly featured and discuss.
Include specific examples as you can as long as they are relevant. Avoid over generalizations such as: hypersexual representation is common in media cultures. Give an example of a game genre or a character from a game to support your statement. Include as much information as possible. It is the information and analysis that will earn you marks.
The main focus of your essay should be clear and evident. If a central focus and/or main point are not clearly presented, the essay will be considered off-topic and marks will be deducted accordingly. Make sure your thesis statement is clear and relevant to the topic
Do not summarize the game you are discussing at length. Excessive plot-summary will be disregarded and marks deducted. Retelling entire stories detracts from your ability to demonstrate that you understand the over-arching themes.
Your essay should be appropriate in language, format and tone and stay on topic. Avoid run on sentences and sentence fragments.
Colloquial language (games are really cool), first-person writing (I think that), contractions (dont, couldnt etc.) and slang (I give Mario props) are not appropriate in your essay.
Also, please do not write pages and pages hoping that I will find one kernel of pertinent information. Be selective in what you write and dont forget to stay on topic!
