As you watch this clip, I hope you will gain a deeper understanding of the key concepts of person-centered child therapy including utilizing empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence, and attention to childrens ‘need to please’. Pay careful attention to Anin Utigaards therapy style and how she mirrors childrens feelings and expresses her own honestly through speech, body language and play.
After watching the session, please submit your responses to the weekly reflection questions.
Reflection Questions:
1. Core Conditions: Utigaard names core conditions for Person-Centered therapy: Empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence. What are your thoughts on working with these core conditions? Are these strengths you already possess as a therapist, or do they pose any particular challenges for you? How do you see yourself developing your capacity as a therapist to work in this way?
2. Discovering New Ways to Be in the World: What do you think about the following statement from Utigaard: “the child is going to try to prove to her that he is who everybody thinks he is; but eventually this will shift, and he will begin to explore other ways of being in the world…”
3. Trust the Process: Do you agree with Utigaards projected treatment plan for Shayla based on, trusting the process? How would you talk about this with her parents and teachers or with Shayla herself? What comes up for you as a therapist when you think about being open-ended and trusting in this way?
