You will choose a film (one that you have seen before, not one I’ve discussed in the lecture) and write 1000 words (minimum) on it; after briefly explaining the significance of the film and the filmmaker(s), you will perform a close formal analysis of two scenes. How do the director’s choices in terms of mise-en-scène, editing, design, and sound shape the film and convey meaning? In order to score a 90% you should cite passages from the book and cite all sources. In order to score 90% or above, you will need to write a clear and coherent essay that cites the assigned reading when appropriate and generally displays a firm command of the ideas and history covered in the class.
