Psychology Discussion Topics: Week 6
For your initial post, choose one of the following options. In your subject line, state the option you have chosen. Feel free to embed pictures with your post.
Option 1: Khler and His Chimps
In your text, A History of Modern Psychology, pp. 276277, read “In Their Own Words: Original Source Material on Gestalt Psychology From The Mentality of Apes (1927).” Then write a post that responds to the items below.
- Speculate about Khler. Based on his writings, explain what type of person he was.
- Describe the impressions you got about his approach to science.
- Explain how Khlers work with chimps reflects other scientific (psychological and other) work going on in this era.
Option 2: Music, Culture, and Gestalt
After reading Music, Thinking, Perceived Motion: The Emergence of Gestalt Theory, write a post that includes responses to the following:
- Does the work described in the article represent a respectable attempt at multicultural psychology? Explain why or why not.
- Explain how musicology, psychology, and the study of cognition relate to Gestalt theory.
- Describe what you learned from this article about how the history of psychology is written.
