In 1914, Europe seemed at the apex of human civilization. It had achieved a level of excellence perhaps unrivalled in world history. Its scientific achievements were unmatched, as seemingly were its military, economic, industrial, artistic, literary, architectural, and musical accomplishments. In 1914, it also had established a far-flung global system that gave it unparalleled reach to the ends of the earth.
This came crashing down though in the horrid trenches of World War I, followed all too soon by the even more destructive World War II and its subsequent revelations of the Holocaust. Europe had descended into unfathomable barbaric depths of depravity. Intellectuals, poets, philosophers, and scientists were left wondering what went wrong.
Jeremiah 17:9 tells us pointedly that the human heart is “desperately wicked” and hard to understand. Across the centuries, philosophers and social thinkers have struggled with the reality of human wickedness but seem reluctant to blame it on sin. We prefer problems that we can resolve ourselves but we can’t resolve the problem of sin . . . only God can. It is easier to locate blame outside us—be it in society, culture, ignorance, the school system, crime, or in lack of education—rather than blame it on something internal. The Bible though is clear that the fundamental problem with mankind is the human heart and that healing begins with being honest. The biblical message of sin is not popular, but is the necessary foundation for understanding the human condition.
