Reseach Review of What are health and healthcare disparities?

The purpose of a research review is to identify the key issues and perspectives within the information you have gathered, show how these issues and perspectives are related to one another, and develop a coherent, overall idea of what your research reveals about the conversation surrounding your chosen topic.

Your research review essay will analyze and synthesize the research you have found on your topic (you should include five to seven scholarly and academic sources). Your essay will identify and represent fairly the different viewpoints concerning your issue. Summarizing the way an author presents his or her findings is necessary and important because it informs your audience that you are knowledgeable about this subject and know the research well. Moreover, synthesizing what you have learned from your various sources shows that you understand how to see the big picture of your issue and know the complexity and scope of the conversation you will be entering.

As you read each source, do the following:
  • Identify conversations about perspectives and evidence related to your issue
  • Find central concepts repeated in multiple sources
  • Find broad themes discussed in your sources
  • Find agreements and disagreements among your sources
  • Find recurring voices in your sources
  • Once you have analyzed your research in this way, you are ready to begin synthesizing the conversation.

Your essay should:

  • Clearly identify the different perspectives surrounding your issue. (what are health disparities?)
  • Be organized around those perspectives, rather than organized around each source.
  • Contain a minimum of five to seven scholarly and academic sources. At least two of those sources must be scholarly.
  • Contain specific (direct quotation, paraphrase, summary) references to your sources.
  • Reference multiple sources to describe each perspective.
  • Follow the guidelines of MLA  for in-text citations and the works cited page.
  • Be formatted in accordance with a recognized documentation style and be approximately five to six pages (1500 to 1800 words) in length.

Is the essay’s issue clear and focused? Is the issue presented as one that is debatable and has multiple perspectives?
Is the essay demonstrating an understanding of the arguments made in the selected readings analyzing his or her chosen topic?
Has the essay discussed the relationship between the perspectives that the writers take on this topic (rather than the rhetorical features)?
Does the essay engage in a discussion of ways in which the writers agree, disagree, or overlap in their thinking? Or is the writer mostly telling readers what the essays say without providing connection or synthesis?
Does the essay provide adequate textual evidence to support his or her synthesis?
