Phenytoin (sodium channel blocker) and ethosuximide (calcium channel blocker) are anti-seizure drugs that stop seizures from happening. These drugs work by inhibiting electrical impulses (action potentials) from occurring.
[1] List all the major ions found in higher concentration inside the cell and the ions found in higher concentration outside the cell.
[2] Define depolarization, repolarization, and hyperpolarization. Make sure to state whether they are moving into or out of the cell.
[3] What are ligand (chemically) gated channels and how are they different from voltage-gated channels? What happens at the axon hillock?
[4] Why do action potentials not occur when these channels are inhibited (blocked)? Be sure to include the phases of an action potential, the channels involved, and the importance of an action potential.
