A Did the United States need to drop the A-Bomb on Japan in order to end World War II. Consider the following questions: This portion of the assignment is worth 41 points.
Did dropping the bomb prevent an invasion of the mainland? Why did Truman insist on using the bomb when many top miliatry advisors (Eisenhower, Leahy, Bard, etc.) told him that it wasn’t necessary?
How was the devastation caused by the bombing of Hiroshima different from that of previous bombings? Why were the consequences so much more devastating than the U.S. military had predicted? Did dropping the bomb have more to do with the USSR than with Japan? Why didn’t the US allow Japan to surrender conditionally (and keep their emperor) in June 1945?
Why, if most American historians have concluded that dropping the bomb on Japan was not necessary, do so many Americans believe that dropping the bomb ended the war?
