Outline for Narrative Outline

This week, you’ll write a narrative essay, and you’ll use an outline to help with the process. Outlining is an important part of the writing process–for many writers, it can be the difference between a “meh” essay and a forceful one.

To create a solid outline, consider the point that you want to make. That is the Northern Star, the guiding light of the story that you tell in your narrative essay. Because even though a narrative comes from your personal experience, it should still have a point that it is communicating to the reader or your audience. Remember the work that we’ve done on the rhetorical situation–what in your narrative story addresses an exigency or situation in the world? What do you want your audience to think about that situation when they’re finished with your story? What do you want them to do?

When you outline with those questions first–not just the points that you want to make, but with your audience’s thoughts first, then your outline will guide you toward making a very strong essay.
