On September 13, 1848, railroad crew foreman Phineas Gage was injured severely when a 43-inch tamping rod was blown through his head. About 6 months after the accident, Gage returned to work. While he was physically capable of working, his personality had significantly changed.

Junior Seau was a National Football League player who killed himself with a gunshot wound to the chest in May 2012. He had retired from the league in 2010 and was reported to have exhibited marked personality changes for months prior to his suicide, including depression, irritability, and attention problems.

Recently South (2015) claimed that findings from the field of behavior genetics were instrumental in showing that genetic differences between people contributed to differences in observed characteristics, including personality.

Could one argue that studying Freud, the neo Freudians, Skinner, Maslow, and others is irrelevant in view of research demonstrating that genetics and physiological or anatomical changes in the brain affect personality?
