31 Aug Modern Middle Eastern History
Pick up one of the subjects that interest you that you would like to learn more about, then consult with me via email. This is a research paper that I expect you to use primary and secondary sources. If you do not know the distinction between primary and secondary sources, here is an example: a speech given by a president is considered a primary source, while somebody’s work (article, book, movie, etc.) about that speech is considered a secondary source. In the most general terms, primary sources are government archives, first-hand interviews, newspaper articles from the era of subject or person, memoirs, and first-hand reports. Again, in the most general terms, secondary sources are books (monographs), and articles. In this paper, I will be looking for the usage of at least 7 items (books and articles) in total, 2 of which must be primary sources.
There are many interesting subjects in this class that you can write a paper about, what is more, important is finding your interest and a subject you are passionate about. Here are some of the plausible subjects: Iranian hostage crisis, Operation Ajax, poppy production in Afghanistan, Kibbutzim in Israel, Dreyfus Affair, American involvement in Arab-Israeli Wars, Osama Bin Laden, ISIS, Origins of Arab Spring, Sanctions against Iran, Feminism in the Middle East, etc. These are just a few examples, you can do on any subject that interests you.
