Lesson Planning

In this chapter, you read about the concepts of meaningful input, explicit instruction, controlled exercises, and communicative output. To put these concepts into practice, select one of the following options and create a communicative grammar lesson for adults that follows the PPP lesson format. You can refer to ITAs Grammar Module or other sources to help you understand your chosen grammar point. Plans that do not use one of these grammar points will not be accepted.

  • Option #1: Present Simple (beginning level)
    • Teach how the present simple can be used to describe habitual actions in ones life (e.g. I take the bus to school every day.) You can assume that students have already been introduced to some basic verbs and nouns to describe common daily routines.

  • Option #2: Past Continuous (intermediate level)
    • Teach how an ongoing action in the past continuous can be interrupted by an action in the past simple (e.g. I was watching the news when my phone rang.). You can assume that you have already covered past simple with the students.

  • Option #3: Second Conditional (high-intermediate/advanced level)
    • Teach how the second conditional can be used to show unreal possibilities (hypothetical situations in the present or future and their probable unreal results) using the past simple in the dependent clause and would or could followed by a base verb in the independent clause. (e.g. If I had more time, I would join a fitness class.) You can assume that some of the students have already been introduced to this grammar topic but that all will need practice using it correctly.

Use or recreate the Lesson Plan Template. You must include within that template:

  • Lesson aim(s)/objective(s) for students to learn that day
  • Assumptions on topics such as student background knowledge, language skills, and/or interest as it relates to your lesson plan
  • A summary of any anticipated problems your students may face and possible solutions
  • Worksheets, visuals, or prompts that you create or modify (attach and cite any sources)
  • Clear instructions to students and role of the teacher
  • Time estimates for each stage
I have attached an example
