Essay #3

For Essay #3, please research on the web one of the popular actors in Irish language film. Choose an actor from the list below. Find four articles/websites regarding the actor’s experience with Irish language film as well as background information. Additionally, view at least two films in which the actor appears (these must be Irish language films, not ones with the same actor in English or French, for example). The films can be ones viewed alread in this class, but cannot be one of the four films/series  from Essays #1 & #2. Your essay must have a header on the first page with your name, the course name, and the essay number. It must also have a works cited page at the end. Use MLA method of citation. While you can begin your research with imdb.com and wikipedia.org, you cannot cite or base your essay on these two sources. However, they can give you ideas on what items to research,  and provide links to primary sources (like authoritative websites and articles).

Pick one of the following actors (film samples follow in parentheses and one article to start your search is provided. Use these films and article as part of your essay):

1. Pl Grofa (, , etc.)

Pl Grofa, a native Irish-speaking actor, has been with the soap opera Ros na Rn (1997-2021) since the early days and has matured as an actor on film. The clip that you have above from Ros na Rn is from a few weeks ago and you see Pl Grofa starting at 3:50 minutes. I have also included as an example of his acting the short film An Seabhac 2011 in which he is the leading star. In addition to using the two videos above in your essay, you can also quote the Connacht Tribune profile from 2015. A PDF of page 96 of that newspaper is located below.

2. Sle Nic Chonaonaigh (, , etc.)

Sle Nic Chonaonaigh, a native Irish-speaking presenter, stars in many programs that feature hobbys, daily living, and locations. TG4 places many of the programs in their “Lifestyle” category. Her sister is Kate Nic Chonaonaigh who specializes in drama. Below is an article from 2019 that you can use in writing your essay. Search the web to see if you can find others. View the two sample films above.

3. Macdara  Ftharta (, , etc)

Macdara Ftharta, a native Irish-speaker, has many years experience with the stage and film. We saw hin the the 1978 film Poitn. He is best known for his role as Tadhg Direin in Ros na Rn between 1996 to present. In the examples above, you can first see Macdara Ftharta at 48:00 minutes in Na Cloigne (2010) Part I. Click here to see  and .

4. ine N Dhroighnein (, , etc)

[Note, both of the films cited above deal with mature themes.] Although ine N Dhroighnein can be seen in Corp + Anam, we already considered that film as a class in Essay #2. In the examples above, you can see ine N Dhroighnein at 14:00 minutes in Na Cloigne (2010) Part I. Click here to see  and . She also plays Liam’s mother in the 2011 short film An t-dh which is given as a second example above. A native Irish-language speaker, she additionally has singing as a skill as can be seen in Na Cloigne above as well as in the full-feature film Cr na Cille (2007).  She also played the role of Tara N Nill in Ros na Rn between 2006-2008.

5. Barry Barnes (, etc)

Barry Barnes is not a new name to Irish languge film. In addition to playing leading roles as father in the teenage soap opera Aifric (2006-2008) and as Justice Joyce in the full-feature docu-drama Airth (2019), he has also played notable roles in the following Irish languge films, An Klondike (2015) and Kings (2007). Barnes is well known as an actor from the Dublin stage. However, there is not much written on this actor. So, you would need to base much of your essay on the example films above. He has appeared as an actor in many English language plays and films as well. However, he is proud of his versatility as both an Irish language actor and an English language actor. You need to be careful when researching Barry Barnes, because there are many people by that name. Also, be aware that most films in which he appears are bilingual with the acception of Aifric. However, even in Aifric, he plays the role of an outsider moving into an Irish-speaking community.

If you are having difficulties finding articles, send me the one or two article citations that you have found, and I will assist you to find others. If you can find no articles on an actor, pick another actor.
