The Gospel of Mark records several occasions where Jesus retreated from everyone else to rest alone or to pray by Himself in solitary places. Finding times away from the noises of life does allow us to ponder and reflect without distractions. This is a good example of a spiritual self-care ritual.
There are other biblical examples of avenues of self-care. For example, Elijah tended to his physical needs for food and rest (1 Kings 19: 3-9). David played the harp and wrote poetry which is preserved throughout the book of Psalms (Psalm 108:1). Paul made time for fellowshipping with his friends who also cared for his needs (Acts 27:3). Peter tells us to cast our cares to Jesus who will care for all of needs (1 Peter 5:7).
For further reflection, consider this:
What avenues do you have for engaging in self-care?
What forms of self-care come most easily to you and which are the most difficult?
