plese see"discussion.doc" and modified it based on the professor’s comment:
You chose two good works of art! The Rhyton is a favorite work of art in this class.
To solidify the feedback and revisions I saw from most everyone last week, here in Week Three, I’m going to leave everyone written feedback on one of their analyses. Of course, you can always revise your assignment! You can use my feedback on one or both of your analyses, as you see fit.
I’m going to leave feedback on your second analysis. They Rhyton is a fun work of art to discuss. Remember, subject is what is depicted (not what the object is or made of). What did the artist try and represent? You mention the elements of art line and texture. What lines specifically do you see and where should we look to see those lines? What specific texture do you see, and is is perceived or tactile? For style, you mention idealized, but earlier, you mention the realistic lion mane.
You support your assertion on the idealized style with the statement, "The artist combined a cup and a winged lion to make a cup for drinking wine into a symbol of power and wealth. This is common in Persian civilization. Due to the economic development and the extravagance of the nobles caused by trade and war, the nobles are no longer satisfied with ordinary utensils." However, that is more about the context and subject, not simply the visual appearance. What elements of art did the artist use to make this lion appear perfect/idealized or realistic? By supporting your assertion, you’ll find another artistic style might apply more.
This work is a great one to discuss for context. Can you go back to the Week Two context page, and choose specific contexts that apply to this work? That’s what your in-text cited research (with parenthetical references, from the two required sources, the book and the online lecture), should support.
Reach out if you have any questions!
