POLS 101 American National Government Congressional Campaign Speech

For this assignment, you will need to select either a member of the House of Representatives or the Senate to profile and draft a campaign speech for. Any current member of the US Congress is acceptable. For a current list of these officials see https://www.senate.gov/senators/index.htm for the Senate and https://www.house.gov/representatives for the House of Representatives.

After carefully researching the background and political positions of your Representative or Senator, write a draft statement that you think that your elected official would make as they are campaigning to be reelected. The statement should include three elements and be around 2.5-4 pages, double-spaced with normal fonts and margins.

1. A biographical statement about the life and career of your Senator. Here you should emphasize their relevant political experience. Often, in these types of speeches, they will discuss their family background and emphasize the ways that they are just like everyone else and therefore, trustworthy. You will want to include something like this as well. (~1 page)

2. A discussion of your Senator’s position on two controversial issues of your choice. What is their general position on what government should do relative to this issue? What, if anything, legislation have they supported in the past? (~1 page for each issue)

3. You should also include a “Works Cited” page.

You should easily be able to find most of the information that you need on your Senator’s website. Other useful sources may be: https://www.opensecrets.org/ on the influence that special interest groups may have on your legislator and https://votesmart.org/ for information on the policy positions of your legislator.
