midterm

NOTES:

1. PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTION.

In his biography of E. T. A. Hoffmann, Rdiger Safranski identifies three characteristics of Romantic authors of the period: they are avid readers; they are obsessed with themselves; and they are fascinated by secrets, mysteries, and the limits of rational understanding.

You have an hour to write about as many of the works we have read this quarter, focusing on these three themes. Spend about 15-20 minutes on each segment. First, what role does reading play in some of the works we have read thus far? Second: are there characters who seem narcissistic? Self-absorbed? Third: when does the rational world stop making sense in these stories? Examples might include madness, magic, or poetic visions.

Try to find at least 2 examples for each of the 3 categories, and please write about a total of at least 5 different works. Given time constraints, I do not expect a polished essay, but I would like to see that you have read all the works and thought carefully about them. Take a little while to think about your answers and sketch an outline. When you are ready to write, you can either write directly onto Canvas, or in a file that you paste onto Canvas. Either way, please stick to the 60-minute limit.
