MGT 201, Human Resource Management
Employee Handbook Project

Purpose:  The purpose of this project is to expose you, the student, to the issues that a manager/company/owner needs to consider when hiring employees.  This Employee Handbook Project does not cover ever issue that needs to be addressed.  Some employee handbooks are very large in an effort to address every possible issue.  The project is just to get you to think about a few.

Overview of the Project:

Pretend you are the owner of a successful restaurant called “In This Moment”.  You would like to keep growing which means you need to hire more employees.  With a larger number of employees, you need to set up some ground rules for them.  The way to do this is with an Employee Handbook.  You need to put one together to give to your employees.

Details of the Project:

  1.  Using the format shown below, create an Employee Handbook stating YOUR policies for each of the items listed.
  2. The Employee Handbook needs to be in Times New Roman 12 point font, double spaced.  There are NO required number of pages, but each issue MUST BE addressed in paragraph form!!
  3. Submit Project to D2L Dropbox

Employee Handbook Format:

I.                    Welcome Letter (From you the owner to the employee)

II.                 Purpose of the Handbook (paragraph(s) stating why each employee should read the handbook, include a page for them to sign that includes a disclaimer that you create where you expect the employee to follow the handbook.)

Section Two: (Don’t confuse the outlined, Roman numeral sections of the handbook itself with the sections that are due….they are different but I left the outline of the handbook in place so you could see the flow of where everything fits in)

III. Company Polices

a.       Hiring Policies

                                                              i.      Conflict of Interest

                                                            ii.      Anti-Nepotism

                                                          iii.      Moonlighting (other employment)

                                                          iv.      Probationary Period

                                                            v.      Standards of Conduct (state at least 10!)

vi.      Background checks used (must use at least 2)

Section Three: This section is a continuance of the company policies that you did in section two….it continues Roman numeral II, Section b through Section i.

b.  Internet Policy (on the clock, using company computers and personal devices)
c.  Telephone Policy (on the clock, using company phones and personal phones)
d.  Email Policy (on the clock using company e-mail or personal)
e.  Social Media Policy (on and off the clock AND what you say)
f.  Hours and Payroll Practices
g.  Overtime
h.  Wage and Performance Reviews
i.  Promotions

Section Four: **This section will be the lengthiest, but needs to all stay together to make more sense, which is why I did not break it up.

IV. Benefits (remember to know what the LAW states about these and not just what you want to do….you can’t conflict with the laws)Again, this is Roman numeral IV of the handbook AND section 4 of your project….that includes the following subsections:

a.       Health insurance

b.      Dental insurance

c.       Profit Sharing Plan

d.      Funeral Leave

e.       Jury Duty Leave

f.        Military Leave

g.      Personal Leave

h.      Medical Leave

i.        FMLA Act Statement

j.        Breaks and Lunch Periods

k.      Holidays

l.        Absences

Documentation/Bibliography Assessment: MUST BE TURNED IN ELECTRONICALLY AT THE END OF THE PROJECT!!

1-Simply cut and paste the outline of the project above into a new word document.

2- For each section that you create and work on, you must do research on the Internet. Part of being a good employee is knowing where to find information when given a task to complete. It’s not just being able to find the information, but that it’s GOOD, USABLE information.

3- Every Website that you end up USING in ANY FORM OR FASHION (even if you feel the need to cut and paste from it), then you MUST also copy and paste the link of that webpage into the outline under the appropriate section so that I know where you got the information and to hold you accountable.

4- If you use ANYTHING other than your own thoughts and words, you must cite it at the end of each section WITHIN your actual handbook. You cannot use someone else’s work as your own—this is plagiarism.

5- Remember, in the real world, what would you do? Would you go out and literally write all of this information out from the top of your head? NO….so work smarter and not harder. There are TONS of resources out there to help you with this. Just DO NOT forget that if you are going to use any of them in any form or fashion that you have to CITE IT!
