09 Nov Samuel Chapter 3 Discussion
Read Chapter 3 of Lawrence Samuel’s The American Dream: A Cultural History and complete the following:
There are 4 parts to the Discussion: Observation, Question, Passage, Response. Each part should be a minimum of 200 words.
Observation: Write a few sentences about something you found interesting or worthy of discussion. It could be something thematic, like its point of view on the American Dream. Or it could be an observation about issues of gender, sexuality, psychology, socioeconomic class, etc. Or, it could be something generally along those lines.
Passage: Write 1-5(ish) lines from the reading in question that stand out to you for one reason or another. Then, explain as best you can what that reason is. It might be admiring or critiquing the construction of the language, the idea being discussed, its relevance to some larger
concept, etc.
Question: Write a question or two about something you don’t quite understand or something on which you just would like other students’
perspective.
Response: Write a response about the above three parts, add something to what they wrote, politely offer a counter perspective, compare
something in their post to something in yours, answer one of their questions, or whatever you want.
