A hotel guest checks into a room for one night. Checkout time at the hotel is noon. The next morning, the guest fails to check out by noon. The front desk calls the guest, who asks if he may stay another night. The front desk allows it. The next day the man again fails to check out by noon. The hotel, annoyed with the guest, allow the police to come to his room at 12:30 to evict. The police find illicit substances in the room. Was the guest entitled to a reasonable expectation of privacy?
a. What if this pattern had been repeated for a period of two weeks and each day the hotel had allowed the man to stay an additional night?
b. Would it change your analysis if the man had left a large cash deposit in order to rent the room?
c. What if the hotel had called the man at noon, telling the guest he had to leave and that he could not stay another night?
