Topic Overview and Background
This section will come from the Week 5 Assignment: Topic and Literature Search. The reason for this section is to provide your reader with an overview of your topic, as well as to highlight some key background information. You will use this section to frame the problem that your proposed research would potentially address. Specific details will vary with topics, but in a general sense you may wish to include:
A description of key findings that have emerged from previous research on your topic that relates to your study
Key findings regarding your topic (from previous research)
Conflicting findings (one study found X, but another found Y)
o Discussion of possible reasons for conflicts
What remains unknown, or what the literature does not clearly reveal
o These are things that additional research (your proposed study, for example!) could address
The importance of the topic, including why it is worth researching
Purpose Statement and Research Question
This section will come from the Week 7 Assignment: Purpose and Research Question. The reason for this section is to provide your reader with a discussion of what your proposed research will accomplish (what’s the point? Why are you proposing to conduct it?). It will also outline the questions that it will seek to answer, and provide a brief review of key studies that have been done on the topic. The specifics, again, will vary with topics, but the following are some general items to include:
Purpose of your research
Research questions that it will seek to address
Using supporting references, provide a hypothesis or description of what you think the findings of your study will be.
Study Design and Data Collection
This section will come from the Week 11 Assignment: Study Design and Data Collection. The reason for this section is to provide your reader with a description or outline of how you plan to collect your data. As with the previous two sections, the specifics of this will vary with topics, but in a general sense, you should include the following:
Identify the research design for your proposed study
Summarize the basics of this design
Explain how you would apply this design to your research purpose and questions
Describe your sample
o Who will your participants be?
o How will you recruit them?
Outline what data would be collected, how the data would be collected, and how the data would be analyzed.
Final Concept Paper
In week 13, the final draft of your concept paper will be due. By this time it is expected that you have reviewed the feedback on each component and asked questions as needed. You will put each component together in a final document, including an APA-style cover page and reference list.
