After the fall of the Han dynasty in the third century, China proper saw a period of ethnic conflict, causing Han Chinese farming community to move from north to south. While the Tang dynasty (618-907) reunified China proper for three centuries, the invasion of northern nomads continued and intensified in the post-Tang periods, especially during the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) founded by the Mongols. As non-Han ethnic groups ruled north China, to what extent they adopted Chinese ways, or being sinicized? How have scholars debated on the issue of sinicization/sinification in their works? By citing relevant sources in the Sourcebook (CC), the Mongol Empire documentary and elsewhere, what is your take on the sinification debate? Lastly, how did the Han Chinese find a way to cope with their loss of north China, an origin of their early civilization?
