After the fall of the Han dynasty in the third century, China proper saw a period of ethnic conflict, causing Han Chinese farming community to move from north to south. While the Tang dynasty (618-907) reunified China proper for three centuries, the invasion of northern nomads continued and intensified in the post-Tang periods, especially during the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) founded by the Mongols. As non-Han ethnic groups ruled north China, to what extent they adopted Chinese ways, or being sinicized? How have scholars debated on the issue of sinicization/sinification in their works?
