The expectations and purpose of this paper are identical to the last one; the only difference is that you will be investigating a question having to do with the works assigned after the last paper was due. The purpose of this assignment is to develop your ability to write a concise, persuasive essay. You will be given a question and asked to develop an argument (thesis) and support your case with evidence from the text. Your paper should have a clear beginning in which you introduce your topic and your argument, a strong middle in which you develop your argument and support it using evidence from our readings, and a conclusion in which you persuasively bring together your ideas and evidence about your topic and argument.
Please read the "Advice on Writing Papers" document attached to this assignment on what constitutes a good paper of this kind. I will use the following rubric/checklist when grading your papers:
Introduction articulates the question that motivates your investigation from the beginning; explains why this question is important; frames the investigation to follow in terms of the text, avoiding extraneous historical reflections; briefly explains your answer to the question (your thesis) and how you arrived at that answer.
Title reflects the question and/or argument of the paper
Each paragraph has one subject in mind, and each paragraph flows cogently into the next.
Language is precise
Frequent use of quotations from the assigned texts to illustrate and support your argument and investigation
Free of grammatical and stylistic errors
Is about 5 pp. double-spaced in length
