09 Nov Evaluation Claim, Research and Theory using _The People of Paper_
As explained in Chapter 10 of Lunsford and Ruszkiewiczs Everythings An Argument, evaluations are everyday arguments from the clothes you choose to wear on any given day, sports teams we follow or which burger spot is the best. While these are considered informal evaluations, becoming a critical scholar demands a more nuanced, well supported and argued evaluation claim.
Writing Task:
Drawing on your inductive class analysis, as well as your own deductive analysis of Salvador Plascencias The People of Paper, write a 5-6 page evaluation claim essay arguing which theoretical approach (Marxist or Feminist) is best suited for analyzing the novel. This is not an exercise in summarizing the text or theory, but rather an examination of evaluating complex theory and then coming to a critical evaluation claim.
To begin, you should develop criteria of evaluation for each theory and then prove how these theories help critically dissect The People of Paper. To build your criteria of evaluation, I will also ask that you research at least one scholarly source each for Marxist and Feminist literary criticism. Then work your way (with effective textual evidence from novel and research) towards a sound, critical evaluation claim. This will also be good practice in researching for our final critical research paper.
