Biol 3 Exam on Biopolitics:
If Biopolitics can be understood as a “political rationality which takes the administration of life and populations as its subject”. And Biopower “names the way in which biopolitics is put to work in society and involves power that exerts a positive influence on life, that endeavors to administer, optimize, and multiply it, subjecting it to precise controls and comprehensive regulations”. (Foucault, 1976-79)
Exam Question:
How do you think the U.S. government and the U.S. agriculture industry (which includes ranchers, farmers and fishermen, food processors, food marketing, supply companies of GM seeds, and pesticide and fertilizer companies) should collaborate together to shape the future of U.S. agriculture and the ability to provide food for a growing human population while maintaining the Biodiversity of the wildlife in the U.S.?
HINT: Think about how agricultural technologies and techniques of today or in the future will exert a positive influence on food security, health benefits to humans, while sustaining wild biodiversity (plants, animal organisms, fisheries and ecosystems; not domesticated species). From everything you have learned in this course this semester, think about how you and your ideas to this question can shape the future. Be mindful of the Precautionary Principle and Law of Unintended Consequences and how that might influence your answer.
