09 Nov Unit 2 Discussion: More Songs and Events from the 1960s
Choose a song that was released sometime between 1960 – 1969 that is not on our listening list, and post a link to the song so we can hear it (click the "reply" button at the top of the thread below to get started). Include the song title, the name of the artist, and the year in which the song was released. It must be a pop/rock song that relates to our class: no classical, jazz or country please. Write a short description (between 3 to 8 sentences) of why you chose the song, including what you like (or dislike) about it. (4 points, -1 point if your description is less than three sentences)
Describe one historical event that occurred during the same exact year that the song was released. The event should be something about history, science, sports, film/TV, literature, or politics. It should not be something about music. The event must also be specific, and must not occur over the span of multiple years. For example, if you write "American troops arrived in Vietnam for the first time in 1965" I will give you full credit. But if you say "the Vietnam War was happening during the 1960s," I will take off 1 point because you are not being specific enough. The purpose of this exercise is to learn about specific things that occurred in the world when the song was first released. (3 points, -1 point if the event is not specific)
After you post your song, you must write at least one reply to a classmate’s post. Your reply must be between 3 to 8 sentences long, and it should describe your reaction to the song posted by one of your classmates (your reaction could include stories, memories, or what you like or dislike about the song). (3 points, -1 point if your reply is less than three sentences)
I hope these posts will inspire some good discussions and debates about the music we are studying, so please feel free to post more than one reply.
