Choose ONE of the following topics:
1. Consider Beauvoirs discussion of either the nihilist, the adventurer, or the passionate man.Begin by analyzing the character type that youve chosen (what are its essential features?).Then explain how, according to Beauvoir, this character type falls short of existentialismsideal. Evaluate her argument. Does she succeed in showing that this character type isdefective? Why or why not?
2. Sartre claims that there is no situation under which freedom can be limited; we are all equallyfree. Beauvoir disagrees. Explain Beauvoirs argument against Sartre on freedom. (You willneed to explain Sartres conception of freedom; explain which aspect of it Beauvoir objectsto; and explain her argument against that aspect.). Then evaluate her argument. Does shesucceed in showing that Sartres conception of freedom is problematic? Why or why not?
3. Analyze and explain Beauvoirs concept of oppression. What is oppression? How does beingoppressed differ from merely facing challenges or obstacles? What would it take toovercome oppression? After answering these questions, critically evaluate Beauvoirsconcept of oppression by raising an objection to an aspect of her account and consideringhow she might respond.
