05 Dec Dutch painting
Order Instructions
For this discussion, you will choose a Dutch work from the text or the Internet and play the part of the 17th century owner of the work. As the buyer, you will explain to your fellow buyers (your classmates) what you, as a member of the Dutch middle class, found compelling about the subject and style. Classmates will respond with their own observations regarding your new treasure. In this way, we will compile a variety of Dutch works and see how the artists utilized Baroque techniques in images of the everyday.
Begin by choosing and researching a Dutch painting, either from the text or from an online source.
For your initial post:
Writing as the 17th century Dutch buyer of the painting –
Introduce your new purchase, providing artist, title, date, and medium.
Briefly identify the subject.
Explain what it is about the style that attracted you. Think about: lighting effects, movement, extension or recession of space, elements that allude to the passage of time, surprising compositional arrangement. Be descriptive and specific. Convince your classmates that you have a great eye for style.
Be sure to cite your research sources within the text and/or online and provide a reference page at the end of your essay.
