06 Jan For this short paper, you will choose the defense mechanism of denial and analyze it according to the criteria outlined below
According to Freud, a defense mechanism is “a process used by the ego to distort reality and protect a person from anxiety” (Griggs, 2014, p. 319). Freud believed that people engage in defense mechanisms automatically, that is without conscious awareness.
For this short paper, you will choose the defense mechanism of denial and analyze it according to the criteria outlined below.
In order to complete this short paper, respond to all of the following components regarding denial in your paper submission:
1. Provide a brief explanation and overview of the defense mechanism of denial. What is the unconscious process employed to avoid anxiety-arousing thoughts or feelings?
2. Provide an example of a situation in which someone might choose to engage in denial. Be creative and thorough! Offer as many details as possible to demonstrate how the defense mechanism of denial might operate in real life—remember, however, that engaging in a defense mechanism is often automatic and, thus, not, a conscious choice.
3. How might someone learn to overcome a situation using the defense mechanism of denial and/or use denial less in the future?
