Discussion 1: Multicultural Introductions
In the first chapter of Counseling the Culturally Diverse, the authors discuss potential obstacles and personal resistances that some counseling students might encounter on the professional path to multicultural competence. This discussion sparks a keen cognizance that while developing such competencies is certainly oriented toward a deeper awareness and understanding of others, this developmental process also involves a journey of self-consideration.
As a means of initiating this process this forum asks us to begin to recognize the diversity that comprises the learning community that has been formed by and within our class. In order to do so, please consider the following definition of culture:
Culture is a system of beliefs, values, and assumptions about life that guide behavior and are shared by a group of people. It includes customs, language, and material artifacts. These are transmitted from generation to generation, rarely with explicit instructions. (https://www.peacecorps.gov/educators/resources/defining-culture (Links to an external site.))
Reflecting on this definition, please post a self-introduction from a cultural perspective. Include basic introductory information (e.g. name, location, program, etc.), and also include information about how you understand your own sense of culture. Perhaps reflect on ethnicity, race, ability, sexuality, gender, family history, holidays, traditions, cuisine, religious communities, social and interpersonal circles, and other elements of life that have shaped your worldview.
