Order Instructions
PURPOSE: The purpose of this assignment is for each student to reflect on some aspect of Texas political culture (see specific topic below).
TOPIC: What it means to be a “Texan”
INSTRUCTIONS OVERVIEW: Each student is to write a 1-2 page essay about the identified topic. See detailed instruction below.
Student Instructions:
Assignment Requirements.
1a. Research the topic thinking about the readings, outside sources, and your own personal experience, and then write an essay addressing the below questions.
1b. Write an essay specifically addressing the following:
1b(1). Write what you think it means to be a “Texan.”
1b(2). Discuss at least three (3) values that characterize a ‘Texan’ (can be single words or statements), and provide an example of each of those values represented in some real way (e.g. can be examples from Texas history or current). See the attached “Values List.pdf” if you need some ideas.
1b(3). Finally, explain if there has been any shift or change regarding those values. If so, explain why; if not, explain what may be responsible for maintaining those values.
Writing & Format Expectations.
2a. Write a minimum of one (1) page (no less than 250 words) and a maximum of two (2) pages. The essay must be double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12-point font, and 1-inch margins all around.
2b. This is a personal reflective essay so, in this case, the use of first-person perspective (using “I” and “me”) and the use of personal opinions and anecdotes as evidence for the point you are trying to make is acceptable.
Properly Cited & Acceptable Sources.
3a. A minimum of one (1) credible, scholarly source is required.
3b. Sources must be properly referenced/cited with in-text citations and a Works Cited/Reference page included (depending on the style used).
3c. See the attached “Acceptable Sources” document for what will be accepted as valid sources.
Submit Assignment.
4a. Submit (upload) an MS Word document file to the Canvas assignment before the due date/time.
4b. Use the following file naming convention: “Lastname_First_GOVT2306_Assignment-#.docx” (Example: Smith_John_GOVT2306_Assignment-1.docx).
