Guidelines for Article Review Assignment
History 325
1. Include the name of the author and title of the article within the first paragraph of your review.
2. The purpose of the review is not to simply retell or summarize the entire article.
3. Rather, you are to provide a brief summary of the main argument or thesis.
4. Beyond this, you will want to discuss how the author’s work fits within the existing body of literature. This particular element of the review is called the historiography.
5. In discussing the article in relation to the larger historiography, you will want to expand on how the author’s work either challenges existing scholarship or extends it in interesting ways.
6. Apart from the historiography, you should also discuss your own critical understanding of the article. How convincing is the writer? Are there any issues with the methodology? Does the work appear to be original, groundbreaking, or fairly standard material?
7. Finally, try to contextualize the article and its overall implications within a broader Caribbean and Bahamas perspective.
8. The article should be typed, three pages in length and use a 12” Times New Roman font format. Use standard margins of 1 to 1 and a half inches.
9. A title page with name and student number should accompany the review.
