METAL RESOURCES, PRODUCTION, AND USE PROJECT

Over the centuries, many metallic elements have been used in coins, jewelry and other objects, including the following: aluminum, chromium, cobalt, copper, gold, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, platinum, rhenium, silver, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, zinc, and zirconium.

With your teacher’s assistance, decide which metal you will investigate. Create a google slides presentation that contains the information you researched. Each individual or group will share their results with the rest of the class. Use the suggested websites and other websites to answer the following questions about your selected metal. To get full credit your answers should be fully explained.

Resources and Distribution

1. How abundant is it?

2. What is its origin; that is, on what continents and in which countries is your metal commonly found?

3. Has this metal even been or is currently being mined in Wisconsin?

4. In what form(s) is it most likely to exist in nature?

5. What types of mining are used to remove it from the Earth?

Production

6. How is it processed?

7. What forms of energy are needed for this processing?

8. In what form is the metal transported for further processing or final use?

Properties and Uses

9. Investigate your metal’s properties (both physical and chemical). Create a summary table listing its important properties. How do the physical and chemical properties of these metals affect their production and eventual use?

10. List at least three important current uses for your metal.

11. Choose one use from your list in Question 10. Identify particular properties that make the metal an appropriate choice for this application.

12. Are the uses and demand for the metal adequately met by its production?
