Part 1: Elaborate the training organization and its major operations.

The training organization is Jubail United Petrochemical Company in Workforce Development and Continual Improvement (Information Technology Division. RT AITD is responsible for all the IT services provided to all the other divisions in SABIC. The IT services such as Data Networking, Telephony, Radio, and Workstations support.

Part 2: Elaborate your major responsibilities during training period.

During the training period, I worked for RT Radio Support Group. The group has two teams. One team is responsible for end-user radios such as portable or mobile radios. The other team is responsible for the backbone of the radio system such as servers, Base Station (BS) and Network Management Systems (NMS).

My training was with backbone team for the radios system. The company is using TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) System which is a European standard for a trunked radio system. The figure below is an example of the typical TETRA Network.

My responsibilities in during the training were as the followings:

Daily Check

Do a daily check for all the major servers of the system and check the connectivity of the system’s networks.

Alarm Check

Check the NMS for any possible alarm in the system. If there is an alarm in the system, we check the alarm type and location. After that, we troubleshoot the point where the alarm occurs. For example, If the alarm is in one of the system’s card, we change that card and upload the system’s parameters by using a laptop.

Preventive Maintenance

Every three months, there is preventive maintenance (PM) for the system’s Base Stations (BS). I was involved in the PM for several Base Stations where we checked the BS alarms, parameters, antenna power, and test the cooling fans by using a laptop. After that, we take a copy from the Base Station’s Parameter to be used in case of any failure.

Part 3: Elaborate the technologies and tools that you worked with during training and what functions you performed with those technologies.

There is dedicated software for the NMS to monitor the TETRA system alarms. We access that software to monitor the alarm.

– The TETRA servers are using Windows Server as an operating system. Therefore, they can be accessed either directly or remotely.

– During the preventive maintenance for the Base Station, the use the laptop to access the BS and check the parameters. The laptop has software that is dedicated for the BS access.

Part 4: List your major achievements and challenges during training period.

– I monitored and reported a critical alarm in one of the BS sites. In addition, I participated in the troubleshooting and solving the issue.

– I managed to learn how to change a defective card in BS and load its parameters.

– By using the dispatcher computer, I managed to deactivate some of the missing portable radios.

– I performed the preventive maintenance for some Base Stations.

– I did programming for some end users radio by using a laptop and the programming software.

Part 05: Elaborate how this training will help in your education and professional growth.

Taking training in such an important system like TETRA added a lot to my knowledge because I practically did some of what I studied in IT Security, Database Management, and Network Management.

In term of IT security, the training showed me how the company applied the IT security policy in the area I worked in. For example, it is not easy to access the facility where I trained because I had to get access from the security to go in. After that, I had to pass through several checkpoints. Finally, someone from the unit had to use his ID to open the facility door and let me in.

In training, I learned how to improve my skills in troubleshooting and solving the system issues. Also, I learned how to report an issue by using the ticketing system and how to fill and close the preventive maintenance report.

Finally, the training showed me how IT could improve companies’ business continuities.
