Find at least three sources/references for your topic online. You will want your sources on the same topic, not simply the same article from another location. Look for reliable sources. These can be government agencies, research institutions, newspapers or reliable magazines, etc. Website blogs cannot be used as sources. Include at the end of your assignment the full citations and direct URL for each reference – this means that the address given must take us to the exact article you used. So www.mayoclinic.org is not sufficient – http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/monosodium-glutamate/AN01251 is an example of a correct URL.
Using your sources, write an article about your topic that you will share with the class in News Report Discussions. You can make it like a news report if you want to and have some fun with it. For example, if you want to you can write it as if you are a reporter giving us the latest information on this breaking story “Reporting live from New York City, this is Amy Dean with the latest news on the efforts to ban large sodas!” As with any good reporter your first sentences are to grab attention and then you go back and explain the background on the topic. If there is a controversy, then you will want to bring in some information from the various sides. The article needs to be all factual information. In good reporting there is no room for personal opinion.
The body of the report must be >400 of your own words (this does NOT include title words, reference page or quotes). You need to incorporate three quotes into your piece – one from each of the three references. A quote is an exact repeat of what someone has said/written and is in quotations with the reference following such as a simple (Newsweek, Sept 18) at the end of the quote. You may alter them somewhat to make it fit your News Report better. If you alter the quote, then add (paraphrased) to the reference. The quotes should add to the Report but be a small part of the writing – so a sentence or two each. The rest of the assignment needs to be in your own words.
