Globally Positioned Social Worker (GPS) -Self-evaluation of Privilege Paper (25 points)
For the final paper, students will synthesize their understanding of their own experiences of privilege and oppression, and discuss their role as a globally positioned social worker in helping to dismantle these systems.
The review should include:
Section 1: Privilege Defined and Discussed ( at least 4 scholarly sources must be included here)
Please define and discuss privilege and address the “paradox of privilege”.
A discussion of the institutional, systemic and individual factors which perpetuate the marginalization of individuals, groups, communities, and societies
Section 2: Positionality, Intersectionality and Personal Reflection ( at least 3 scholarly sources must be included here)
Please define and discuss intersectionality and positionality.
The student’s personal reflection on intersections of their own areas of privilege and experiences of oppression (this can include race, class, gender, education, citizenship status, etc.) Which of your identity markers put you in a position of oppression and marginalization and which identity markers put you in a position of power and privilege.
Critical analysis of the importance and relevance of confronting one’s own internalized “-ism’s,” as well as systemic “-ism’s” (e.g., racism, classism, ableism, heterosexism, etc.).
Section 3: Globally Positioned Social Worker
In thinking about your positionality and identity markers, please discuss what it means for you to be a globally positioned social worker in today’ s society.
Considering your own future social work practice, discuss the importance of making systems of privilege visible and dismantling systems of oppression locally and globally.
Identify your specific action plan in how you will promote cultural humility/sensitivity, social justice in a multicultural/global community. Identify two challenges that you may anticipate in your future work as a globally positioned social worker and how you will work to overcome those challenges.
Paper should be written in APA 7th edition format. Minimum of 5-7 pages not including cover page and references
