Problem-focused, expanded problem-focused, detailed, and comprehensive examinations are the four categories of examinations. Problem-focused is a limited examination of the affected body area or organ listed by the chief complaint. Expanded problem-focused is the affected body area, organ system, symptomatic or related body areas/ organ system. Detailed is considered an extended examination of body parts that are affected and/or a related organ system.Comprehensive is the most extensive examination, the multi-system examination and should include findings of 8 or more of the 12 organ systems.(Carol J.
