Unit 4 Assignment: Health Information Security
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy and Security Rules establishes federal requirements for keeping patients’ health information secure. The Privacy Rule establishes national standards for the protection of individually identifiable health information. The Security Rule established a national set of security standards for protecting certain health information that is held or transferred in electronic form. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Civil Rights (OCR) has responsibility for enforcing the Privacy and Security Rules.
A U.S. federal government interagency report indicates that there have been 4,000 daily ransomware attacks on HCOs since early 2016, which is at least a 300% increase from 2015. Medical and health professionals use personal mobile devices to communicate and collaborate on patient concerns regularly. Healthcare organizations must employ effective prevention and response actions that will significantly mitigate cybersecurity risks.
