Part 1: Mentor Discussion
With your mentor, reflect on classroom practices that increase ELL family engagement. Collaborate with your mentor teacher to identify a parent/guardian of an ELL student to conduct an interview. Discuss the following:
Strategies and supports used to communicate with families of ELLs and engage them in the learning process.
Ways to partner with families in supporting both the home language and English language development.
Individualized instruction and assessment practices based on academic characteristics of ELLs (i.e., background knowledge, educational history, and current performance data) and communicating needs with families.
Effective instructional practices based on personal characteristics of individual ELLs (interest, motivation, strengths, and needs) and their family (language use, literacy practices, circumstances).
Review the ELL parent/guardian interview questions below to ensure they are appropriate for your interview. Adjust for appropriateness and develop a minimum of two additional questions to ask ELL families that will provide insight into building partnerships.
The date, time, location, communication considerations, and other logistics for the ELL parent/guardian interview. Be sure to take notes during your mentor discussion as you will provide them when submitting this assignment.
