CRITICAL ISSUES

Introduction

Introduce the critical introductory issue researched. State clearly why it is a critical issue in the context of

the NT book you have selected. Why does it matter? Offer a brief overview of the other interpretive

options that “compete” with the specific view that you will argue for.

Introductory Assumptions

Touch on the other critical issues related to your NT book: authorship, date, etc. State your assumptions

regarding these and move on. This is where you will place your critical issue in the larger context of the

other critical issues related to the book.

History of Research

What do other scholars say about this topic? Note authors, works, dates, etc. This section of the paper will

provide a chronological flow related to your topic. What positions did previous authors hold? Why did

they hold those positions? Your reader should be able to see how your view fits into and contributes to

this larger discussion. It does not have to be your unique contribution; you may stand on the work of

others, but show why you think the position you favor is the most accurate.

Detailed Discussion of the Critical Issue

Really dig into the issue. Exegete the relevant passages and engage the scholarly research. Note any text-

critical issues in the relevant passages, etc. What did X author say about this passage? Build your case and

argue persuasively for the view you hold. Leave no stone unturned

Notable Deviations and or Ancillary Issues. Every issue has that one scholar who is off the

charts. Assuming you think they are contrary to the majority of scholars, state his/her view and why it has

been rejected. Also, your issue will be surrounded and affected by other critical issues in the NT book you

have selected. Given that they are not the specific issue you are researching, they should be included in

your paper but add a third level subheading.

Conclusion

Provide a summarization, expressly state the view you hold on the critical issue, note its overall

contribution to the scholarly discussion surrounding your NT book. Finally, note how new research could

affect your critical issue. Assuming that most critical issues are discussed and debated to no real end,

what could further the discussion?
