Order Instructions
We’ve spent significant time looking at the use of messaging and framing to drive change. Shortly after we went into Iraq, President Bush declared “Mission Accomplished,” gave a patriotic speech on an aircraft carrier, and posed for pictures in a flight uniform. This incident has largely been lampooned due to the still-continuing action in the middle east, but was Bush actually incorrect with his actions on that day? Could he have delivered the message in a more appropriate way?
The highlights of that speech and some of the initial reactions can be found here: https://abcnews.go.com/Archives/video/2003-mission-accomplished-iraq-9099537
Week 2 Overview:
NATURAL DISASTERS
In this Module, we will move to the next category, natural disasters. Both Hurricane Katrina and Fukushima stemmed from the same problem, but the causes of why they were not prevented are quite different. While both were absolute catastrophes and the ongoing problems will last for years, they failed for very different reasons.
NATIONAL SECURITY
We will look at the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and what lessons we can learn from it. You’ll also read the prologue of the Warrick book, as it also provides compelling information relating to these issues. We’ll tackle terrorism and the Warrick book in full later in the course.
