Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)

Thesis statement

Cognitive Behavior therapy (CBT) has been hypothesized to be one of the most used and

has been seen as one of the most useful the psychotherapy treatments for many disorders, such as

depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol, and drug use problems, marital problems, eating

disorders, and severe mental illness. It is also hypothesized to change behavior by instilling

positive thoughts in someone. This is attributed to the fact that it is more goal-oriented,

problem-solving, time-limited, and focuses on the present. This essay will support the

hypotheses using five scholarly articles.

1. Introduction

The definition of cognitive behavior therapy, its best uses, and the way it is used in patients of all

degrees of illness.

2. Scholarly articles to prove the application of CBT

a. Pike, K. M., Walsh, B. T., Vitousek, K., Wilson, G. T., & Bauer, J. (2014). Cognitive

behavior therapy in the posthospitalization treatment of anorexia nervosa.

CBT was compared to nutritional counseling in terms of effectiveness for the treatment of

the disorder. Many patients under CBT recovered more completely than those under nutritional

counseling who showed higher relapse rates.

b. Deale, A., Husain, K., Chalder, T., & Wessely, S. (2014). Long-term outcome of cognitive

behavior therapy versus relaxation therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome: a 5-year

follow- up study. American Journal of Psychiatry.

Relaxation therapy and CBT effectiveness were compared in patients suffering from this

disorder. More relapse rates were seen in relaxation therapy. Relaxation therapy also resulted in

unpredictable symptoms.

c. Patrick, C. (2014). Preventing Future Crime With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

retrieved from http://www.nij.gov/journals

CBT in the prevention of future crimes was the best intervention compared to deterrence,

a discipline that was seen to increase rates of recidivism in young and adult offenders.

d. Jones, C., Hacker, D., Cormac, I., Meaden, A., & Irving, C. B. (2014). Cognitive

behavioural therapy versus other psychosocial treatments for schizophrenia

(Review).

In the treatment of schizophrenia, there was no significant difference between patients

receiving CBT and those receiving other types of interventions. CBT was however encouraged to

use since it makes people open up to their emotions.

e. Parker, G., Roy, K., & Eyers, K. (2014). Cognitive behavior therapy for depression?

Choose horses for courses. American Journal of Psychiatry.

CBT was found to be effective since it targets all aspects of the life of a depressed person. It was

however not effective for severe depression.

3. Conclusion

In conclusion, the outcomes and results from the different works indicate that CBT has a

functioning role in the treatment of various disorders. It can also be used in the prevention of

crimes. It alleviates the symptoms of individuals reducing relapse rates. From our hypotheses, we

can conclude that cognitive-behavioral therapy is one of the effective therapies used in the

treatment of various disorders such as depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol, and drug use

problems, marital problems, eating disorders, and severe mental illness and can be used to

prevent future of crimes and overall self-harm.
