Instructions
Many would argue that it was only in the middle of the 19th century that the topic of eschatology began to be fleshed out. Only since that time has substantial refinement taken place for such topics as the Rapture, the millennium, the great tribulation, and other aspects preceding and following the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
Prior to that time, people did not explain to one another that they were amillenial, premillennial, or postmillennial, they did not know what it meant to be pre-trib, mid-trib, or post-trib, and they did not argue about whether or not the millennium was a literal thousand years or something else entirely.
People did, however, discuss other aspects of eschatology at length, although they would not have understood these concepts to be a part of the domain of eschatology: such topics as heaven, hell, and the intermediate state were definitely objects of interest, concern, and fascination.
