The policies discussed throughout the last eight weeks and the various scenarios we researched do not apply to me or my occupation at this moment. I am not in law enforcement or work with any departments or agencies, but I plan to in the near future. My understanding of policies was limited and pretty vague at the start of this class. I understood the planning process for a mission or an event and some key elements that would be included. I did not know to what extent planning actually consisted of; the scenario we researched for the larger portion of this class exposed me to how much detail goes into planning, such as researching similar events in the past and understanding their successes and failures. Investigating after-action reports allows departments to know where they failed and be able to implement processes to correct those failures. I understood that politics had some sort of role in policies, procedures, and law enforcement agencies’ operations. I now know that politics play a much more significant role in these items. The key takeaway for this class would be the importance of policy decisions made in the field of criminal justice and public safety and how those decisions can impact top leadership down to the officers on patrol.
I enjoyed learning from everyone over the last eight weeks and have taken away a wealth of knowledge from each of you. I wish everyone continued success throughout their educational goals.
