Develop a Policy Brief

Students will develop a written Policy Brief utilizing the chosen state or federal bill selected in Assignment 1. A policy brief is a “short document providing findings and recommendations to an audience who may not be experts in an area of interest” which serves to give policy advice (DeMarco & Adams, 2014, p. 209). Nurse leaders can utilize a policy brief to explain a perceived problem to an administrator, constituents, and/or legislators. A policy brief provides a quick snapshot of the problem or the issue and a solution.

Selected Bill:

Bruce’s Law

  • Federal bill – A bill to establish an awareness campaign related to the lethality of fentanyl and fentanyl-contaminated drugs, to establish a Federal Interagency Work Group on Fentanyl Contamination of Illegal Drugs, and to provide community-based coalition enhancement grants to mitigate the effects of drug misuse.
  • S. 4358 introduced June 8, 2022
  • Primary sponsor: Lisa Murkowski, Co-sponsors: 2 Democrats, 1 Republican
  • I chose this bill because I have cared for many patients with addiction to fentanyl. Majority of these victims became addicted due to consuming another drug that was laced with fentanyl without their knowledge. Education and awareness are important and could help reduce the number of victims to overdose from this lethal drug.
