1  Activism Project (Brainstorming)

“Understanding social justice means that we must be able to recognize that relations of unequal social power are constantly being negotiated at both the micro (individual) and macro (structural) levels. We must understand our own positions within these relations of unequal power. We must be able to think critically about knowledge. And most importantly, we must be able to act from this understanding, in service of a more just society” (Sensoy & DiAngelo, 2017, p. 216).

As a way to help you find ideas for your final project before the due date (August 10th), we are going to work on a short draft to brainstorm initial ideas for your final project.

For this assignment, you will propose an initial idea for activism in your life and describe a plan for implementing it (although implementation is not required). You are expected to identify a problem of discrimination or unequal distribution of power and describe the structures, systems, and ideologies that contextualize this problem. You will draw from course concepts to outline a plan for transformation or intervention to address the problem and discuss the potential challenges with making change.

To help you begin thinking about it, choose one of the following categories, and then suggest a specific context where you can apply your idea for activism and change. You will further develop your plan in the remaining weeks of the term, so there is no need for details yet.

Categories:

Personal/Individual

Friends and Family

Classroom/Workplace

Community

Instructions-

In a short paragraph (~100 words) discuss your initial idea for your activism project (e.g., a podcast addressing gender inequality on campus)

Include what motivates you to pursue your plan

Include what categories (from the list above) you will chose.

Refer to the Final: Activism Project for more details. In the description of this assignment, you will find a sample that you can use as a guide.
