Independent variable is considered the determinant of the direction of a hypothesis; it is considered the cause determining the outcome. In an experimental research, independent variable is the intervention introduced or the manipulated variable to determine what happens to the independent variable (Polit & Beck, 2017). Unlike independent variable, dependent variable is what is being studied, it is the outcome a researcher seeks to look out for either in correlational or experimental research design, in an evidence-based practice sense, dependent variable is considered the population (Melynyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011).
For the capstone project change, the author will collect data on nurses’ level of adherence to every shift chlorhexidine bath of patient and effective documentation as the independent variable, as this can be manipulated to change the outcome of the project, hence making it the independent variable. Also, the dependent variable will be the incidence rate of health care acquired infections (HAIs), as this is the proposed outcome that is being studied.
